If you’ve spent any time thrift shopping in New York, you’ve probably come across the Salvation Army Thrift Store & Donation Center. It’s one of those reliable spots where the mix of used clothing, furniture, and household goods reflects the city’s constant turnover. As part of the Salvation Army chain, it’s known not just for affordable secondhand finds but also for supporting community programs, which adds a meaningful layer to every purchase.
Inside this New York thrift store, the selection can be surprising. You’ll find everything from vintage jackets and shoes to solid furniture pieces that look like they’d be right at home in a Brooklyn apartment. The housewares section often carries practical items—think lamps, dishes, and kitchen gadgets—that are great for anyone outfitting a new place on a budget. Books and small electronics show up too, making a quick browse worthwhile even if you’re just looking for something small.
What’s nice about Salvation Army New York is how the inventory feels fresh yet familiar. Prices are generally fair, and the store has that classic thrift vibe — a bit of organized chaos where patience pays off. It’s the kind of place where a quick visit can turn into a deep dive into racks and shelves, uncovering everything from vintage band tees to gently used coats. If thrift shopping is about the hunt, this location is a solid choice that feels rooted in the city’s diverse thrift scene.

This was my first time donating clothes here, and the staff were very kind and helpful. At first I accidentally went to the wrong entrance because I followed the store sign, and I had to carry all my bags upstairs. The staff kindly let me know there is another entrance with an elevator, which made things much easier. They also showed me where and how to donate and guided me through filling out the receipt. I really appreciate their help and had a great experience. I would definitely come back to donate again!
Nice place and kind staff. If you’re coming here to donate, DO NOT give your bags to the guys who are standing downstairs next to the entrance. You need to bring them up to the second floor and go inside the store. The guys downstairs are scamming people and taking bags away to sell! They will ask you “are you here to donate?” and “kindly” take the bags from you. We were lucky enough to stop right outside the door to see them try carry our bags away to the car. When they spot us, they left the bags and disappeared, so we were able to bring the bags to the actual store. The staff in the store is aware of the situation, so hopefully this will be solved soon, but be careful.
For donations, use the entrance further east (pictured below). The elevator is located here. The west entrance involves three steep flights of stairs. Great staff, well organized!
Not all Thrift Stores are equal. This one was not as accessible as others. Since this is in The City it's located in an old building that means it's a walk up. I don't know if they have an elevator. I didn't see one but I didn't ask either. They do have colors for discounts for the week. I visited this site in the afternoon not early morning. There were some interesting things but I felt the prices were on the high side. But it's The City. I didn't find anything this go round. Sad...other thrift stores I visited in the past within walking is Housing Works. Happy thrifting!
I'm sure you can still find lots of great items here, at great prices. They are cheaper than Goodwill. But, long gone are the days of weekend coat sales and amazing furniture deals. The furniture floor that used to have wall-to-wall sofas had exactly 2 on my last visit. It consistently looks sparse and picked-over. Skip that floor and head up to clothing where they still have a decent amount of inventory.
