About This Store

Portland thrift store shopping at Buffalo Exchange

Buffalo Exchange in Portland is a go-to Portland thrift store if you’re into secondhand shopping with a bit of style flair. This spot is part of a well-known chain that balances the best of vintage and current trends, so you’re not just digging through random racks. They focus on used clothing that’s been handpicked for quality and wearability, making it easier to find something you’ll actually keep around.

Inside, you’ll find a mix that leans heavily on clothing, from classic vintage tees to modern streetwear pieces and everything in between. But it’s not just shirts and jeans — they often have jackets, shoes, and accessories that add a fun twist to your wardrobe. While Buffalo Exchange locations typically don’t focus much on furniture or housewares, their clothing selection is strong enough to keep you coming back. You might spot some cool vintage band tees or a leather jacket that feels like it’s been waiting for you.

The vibe here matches that of Portland’s thrift scene: casual, approachable, and full of personality. People who appreciate thrift shopping enjoy Buffalo Exchange because it’s a bit more curated than your average thrift store, which means less sifting and more finding. It’s a good fit if you want the thrill of thrifting but prefer a cleaner, more organized shopping experience. If you’re exploring Portland thrift stores, this Buffalo Exchange location is worth a stop for refreshing your closet with unique secondhand styles.

You’ll get a sense that this isn’t just about saving a buck — it’s about sustainable fashion and keeping clothes in circulation. That’s a pretty Portland-friendly attitude for a Portland thrift store, and it shows through the quality and variety on offer here.

I brought in 6 garbage bags worth of clothes for selling today (I called ahead, I promise). My buyer (and their coworkers) were all super friendly, giving compliments on my clothes (so validating), and generally making me feel welcome in the shop. They ended up taking about 40 pieces and I walked out with a sizable store credit to come back and shop with! ETA: I'm a size XL and brought in mostly L/XL clothing.

I love this location! Staff are SUPER SWEET!. I've never had a bad interaction. Buying/selling here is always a positive experience for me. They have a great and fun selection and I rarely leave with anything I bring in to sell, their offers are fair and remember folks you always have the option of not accepting an offer if it's not what you were hoping for, it is not personal they take what is in style/season.

I love this location! I've been shopping/selling here for 3 years now. I think some of the reviewers are forgetting that this is a business and they aren't obligated to buy anything from you -- they are looking for specific pieces in the right season that will sell quickly. It's not personal! I've always had great interactions with their staff, have found a ton of cute, high quality men's and women's clothes, and selling is usually pretty painless without too much of a wait.

Last time I brought in clothes to sell, the person going through my clothes VERY non-committally told me to try to come on Thursdays between 2 and 6pm if I can because I was reselling. I already pretty rarely come to this location because it is out of my way, parking is horrible, and they often take very few or no items (which I think is because of the amount of clothes they have in stock and the amount of people trying to sell, once they told me I had great items and to try bringing them again later) I went again today (a few days after the last time I went, which I normally wouldn’t do but I had extra time because of the long weekend, I knew I likely wouldn’t be able to go on Thursday, and I had a really good new batch of items to bring in) and the manager told me that now I could ONLY sell from Thursdays from 2-6pm. I don’t know if this is a new rule, but the person who originally told me did not make it clear, and other buyers had never said anything about it to me previously when I had mentioned that I pick up items from the goodwill bins to take in. I was hoping they would at least go through the items I had brought today since the policy was not made clear to me previously, but they wouldn’t. I’m not sure what the motivation is for trying to limit resellers (because literally everyone coming in is reselling clothing, which Buffalo Exchange is then also reselling…), but I feel like there are better ways to do it. Thursdays between 2-6 is super limiting, I don’t get off work until around 4, and I don’t want to have to drive there during rush hour so I typically plan to go there when I’m already in the area or during times traffic and parking won’t be as bad. I feel like they should at least extend the time frame until 7, or add another time block over the weekend, like Sunday mornings. They could also limit people reselling in other ways other than a specific timeframe, like requiring an appointment, limiting to once a week, only allow a smaller amount of items to be brought in, etc, or only counting people as “resellers” if they’re exchanging for cash and not trade. I always take trade because it’s a better deal, and I use it to buy clothes for myself (I don’t resell anything online, I just take clothes from the bins to buy/sell/trade stores, so anything I buy at Buffalo is for me), so it’s going back into the business. I don’t think it should matter who the items are coming from, especially since resellers are often bringing highly sought after items. I’m still learning and getting better at the kinds of items stores are most likely to buy, and this location is very selective so I only even made the trip there because I was bringing in items from Madewell, Lululemon, Urban Outfitters, Quince, Everlane, etc, and 5+ new with tags items including Hollister jeans and an Anthropology shirt. I typically go to the other location more because it’s closer to me and they take more items, but I take all my items to Buffalo Exchange before taking them anywhere else because they have the best payouts and best selection of items for reasonable prices (understanding that they’re always going to have higher prices than some other thrift stores just by nature) I’m bummed that I’ll rarely be able to go to this location in the future, because it’s rarely feasible for me to go after work, and if I do go after work, I’m less likely to look around the store and buy stuff afterwards than if I was able to go at a more convenient time. I don’t know the rationale for why they want to restrict people from reselling, but I feel like there are better ways to handle it than having such a small timeframe that overlaps with when most people are at work.

This was a really frustrating experience. I sold items here and chose store credit, used part of it, and had $25 remaining. The employee asked if I wanted a “card,” but never explained that the credit ONLY exists on the card or that losing it would mean losing the balance entirely. I reasonably assumed the credit would be tied to my transaction or name. What makes this worse is that the “card” isn’t even a real card — it’s just a small paper card that’s easy to lose even if you accidentally washed it with your clothes it’s gone. There was no warning, no explanation of the risk, and no offer of a receipt or backup record. When I came back and explained the situation, I was told there was nothing they could do and that it’s “policy.” That’s not acceptable. If a business is going to treat store credit like cash, especially on something as disposable as a paper card, customers should be clearly informed before they agree. This could have been avoided with basic transparency. Instead, I lost $25 due to poor communication. I won’t be using store credit here again and would strongly caution others.
