Me and my family shop at the Decatur, Alabama Goodwill often. This is our favorite store, we enjoy spending time just browsing around and often find exactly what we need or may have been looking for. I’m on a fixed income and was struggling this past Christmas to stay within budget. I have 3- grand children, 1-6yrs old, & 2-others just over a year old. We had several things in mind and thanks to the help of your store manager Brent, we were able to fill the list and more, for a very reasonable & affordable price. The staff are all so very friendly and never fail to speak to us and offer their help. Just to give an example, Brent came from the back room during the holidays and asked if we were looking for anything specific, before we left the store he had brought us several items that we were looking for. Over the next 3-visits with Brent & his staff helping, our needs were met. Thanks so much to all the staff, we’re so grateful for a wonderful store like Decatur, Alabama Goodwill. A solid 5-stars 👍👍
Very spacious store compared to some Goodwills, but this one doesn’t seem to put many new items out frequently. Clean, and restrooms are cleaned. Workers are nice and friendly. Prices have gotten much higher now, and even fake items are priced high and sold like they are real. It seems that most items are run through Google lens (wasting a lot of workers time) before priced and they just choose a price based on their first searches (which is NOT the value of the item…). I would guess that sales are down at this location. I definitely haven’t bought anything in a few weeks and am a regular customer. Have found many better places in town recently that are more reasonable and that don’t charge an extra 3% to use my debit card 😉. Hope this store can turn around because I really do like many things about this location!
Visited this Goodwill location for the first time today and didn’t have any problems with the place. It was pretty spacious. However, I found a TV that I wanted to purchase, paid for it and told them I’d be back to pick it up later. I come back a couple of hours later and the TV I wanted had been sold to someone else and the SOLD sticker I filled out with my name and number that the employee took back there after I paid was on a different TV. The employee apologized and tells me that usually customers come back with the employee to ensure it’s put on the correct item, but that they were so busy earlier when I came. I feel like they should get a better system, like have the customer put the SOLD stickers on the item or do like other thrift stores I shop at and hold the items behind the front counter until pickup. Especially if they’re not gonna put the stickers on the correct items. Thankfully I was refunded.
This store used to be a lifeline for affordable home goods and everyday clothing. Now, more than two-thirds of the hard goods have disappeared, replaced by racks of clothing they openly admit will shift to “boutique” pricing of up to $30 for a pair of jeans that used to top out at $8.99. The upward creep is already visible. Local donations no longer stay local. Items given by this community are being shipped to Birmingham for auction, while the shelves here grow thinner and prices climb higher. For a nonprofit built on donated goods, that shift feels less like mission work and more like margin chasing. When donated essentials are rerouted and everyday shoppers are priced out, the people who lose are the families who relied on this store as a practical resource. This direction serves executives and balance sheets, not the neighborhood that supported it for years. I can already anticipate the "response from owner" where you feed me a line about how your mission is to employ people and how you employ members of my community. If that's the case, why have you installed a half dozen new cameras in order to be able to better fire your employees? And why haven't you replaced anybody who's quit in the last 5 months? People that I knew by name, people that knew me that I saw daily. As of Monday, February 2nd, there has been 2 weeks of managers running the front cash register because they haven't hired a single person in months. (This is a corporate failing, not local)
If you’re thinking of donating here, please take some advice-Dont. The gentleman who came out didn’t unload any of the bags we had. He was mad because we were unloading them. He was rude and very disrespectful. To be honest, we’re trying to do the right thing and you get people who don’t want to do their job or be kind to people. If you’re the manager and reading this, we are not the only ones who feel that way. He told my husband don’t bring that much stuff anymore, he doesn’t have anywhere to put it. 4 bags
